Commercial Satcom infrastructures have been used effectively by militaries in numerous conflict operations but concerns remain regarding building a joined-up military infrastructure. Key areas of discussion are:

Ensuring information superiority while incorporating commercial satcom solutions
Optimising costs versus quality of service - where one should draw the line
Assessing your unit's readiness to maximise real benefits from deployed solutions
Effectively bench marking against international standards and best practices

10:50 Networking Coffee Break (20min)
11:10 Panel Discussion: Understanding government and military user requirements – next generation satcom capabilities

Military and government leaders are looking to improve satellite performance through seamless network service. In this session, panellists will address the requirements to achieve network success. Key topics include:

Securing communication using a satellite-based digital processor that supports frequency hopped signals from users
Delivering more bandwidth and higher data speeds
Meeting future military and government demands through enabling innovative solutions
Supporting powerful new devices with enhanced voice quality and global reach
Environmental disaster monitoring and integration of small satellite technology of Regional Organization for Protection of the Marine Environment

12:10 The EU Satellite Centre Case Study: Exploitation and dissemination of GEOINT - next generation european governmental satellites, communications through cooperation

The European Council on Security & Defence of December 2013 called to enhance the development of EU capabilities. These include preparations for the next generation of governmental satellite communication through close cooperation between the Member States, the European Commission and the European Space Agency. The EU Satellite Centre is an operational example of the implementation of the dual-use and pooling-and-sharing paradigms in:

Integrated GEOINT production and dissemination
Service coordination within the security dimension of the Copernicus programme
Other security-related EU space programmes

Mario Savastano, Strategy Manager, EU Satellite Centre

12:30 Networking Break (20min)
12:50 Panel Discussion: Commercial hosting of military payloads – opportunity or threat?

While hosted payloads allow for greater flexibility, integrated sensor and communication solutions, there are associated downfalls: less design control and orbital location among others. Military end users, hosted payload operators and system providers – will discuss:

Assessing key concerns associated with hosted payloads deployment and operation for hosts, governments and payload manufacturers
Evaluating the cost benefits and downfalls of hosting versus deploying own satellites
Understanding the various types of hosted payload missions and their underlying economics
International case studies of civilian hosting of military payloads

Abdulaziz Al Mutawa, Sr. VP Technology Innovation, Etisalat
